Take a deep breath. And another.
For many people, a diagnosis of ovarian cancer is met with shock and denial. It may take a few days, or even longer, to accept that this is actually happening. Some people say that the toughest part is feeling so out of control of life.
The sense of uncertainty about the future and the anxiety can feel overwhelming. It might help you to know that:
- There are many treatment options and therapies for ovarian cancer.
- Statistics can be misleading. Remember that you are unique. Focus on getting the best treatment possible, rather than on statistics that usually reflect large groups of cancer patients who were treated years ago.
Try to keep a positive attitude. It will help you explore treatment options and make wise treatment choices. Recognize, however, that you can't be positive all the time. We call that society's "Tyranny of Positive Thinking."
