Who We Are

Fred's Team is a dynamic group of first-time and veteran marathon runners with the common goals of raising funds for critical cancer research and completing a marathon. In 2007, 750 runners competed in the ING New York City Marathon wearing the orange-and-purple Fred's Team uniform. In addition, Fred's Team runners have also competed in marathons around the country and throughout the world -- in Anchorage, Antarctica, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and San Francisco -- to benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The Man with the Plan

In 1991, Memorial Sloan-Kettering forged a unique partnership with Fred Lebow, running legend and creator of the New York City Marathon. While undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Fred jogged up and down the halls of the hospital. Seeing the faces of pediatric patients, he became determined that runners could help find a cure. In 1992, he completed the New York City Marathon while encouraging friends and relatives to sponsor their runs and raise money for Memorial Sloan-Kettering. His legacy lives on -- Fred's Team has raised over $32 million since its inception. The team has expanded beyond New York City as runners cross finish lines around the country and globe.

Closer to a Cure

When Fred Lebow co-founded the New York City Marathon in 1970, 55 runners crossed the finish line in Central Park. In 2007, New York Road Runners hosted the largest marathon in the world -- with over 39,265 starters and 38,607 finishers. While runners can designate their funds to be allocated toward any area of cancer research, money raised by Fred's Team runners primarily benefit the Aubrey Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering treats more children with cancer than any other institution in the world, and the Center's physicians and scientists have pioneered many therapeutic regimens that have made possible the remarkable progress in treating many infants, children, teenagers, and young adults with cancer.

Ways to Get Involved

Fred's Team is always looking for enthusiastic and energetic participants. When you commit to the race, you also commit to raising funds, and our staff provides helpful hints and fundraising advice, comprehensive training guidelines, and a team uniform. Check out our race calendar to find an event. Don't see the event you're looking for? Click here to learn about participating in an off-calendar event. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at fredsteam@mskcc.org.

Volunteers also play an essential role in the marathon, and can help out at weekend training runs by distributing refreshments or cheering for Fred's Team runners on race day. To learn more, visit the Volunteering section of the Web site.

Make a donation to support a runner or general cancer research. In addition to individual contributions, Fred's Team is looking for a corporate sponsor to support our runners, which in turn will help direct even more money to innovative research and patient care initiatives.
