In order to provide the highest quality of care to our patients, Memorial Sloan-Kettering conducts patient satisfaction surveys on a regular basis. These surveys help us set priorities for improvements and maintain the highest standards of care by assessing the experiences of our patients. About the Survey

The Rating System

The satisfaction of our patients is measured by questionnaires that are mailed by Press Ganey Associates to randomly selected patients after they've had an appointment with a Memorial Sloan-Kettering physician or an inpatient hospital stay. Across the country, millions of patients are polled with similar questionnaires, based on their experiences at other hospitals. From this information, we can see how our patients rate us, and we can compare these results with the average scores of hospitals that participate in the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Measurement process.

What is Rated

The questionnaires ask patients to rate many of aspects of their hospital experience, from the speed of admission to the skill of the physicans. Inpatients and outpatients are polled with separate questionnaires, and the results are reported separately. Responses to all questions are added together for an overall score.

What the Numbers Mean

Patients are asked to answer questions with ratings from Very Good to Very Poor. The ratings are given numerical values:

  • Very Good = 100
  •         Good =  75
  •           Fair =  50
  •          Poor =  25
  •  Very Poor =    0

The scores are totaled for all patients, and averaged, so that a single score is assigned to each question. This single score represents the combined input of every patient who answered this question during the measurement period.
