Our Team of Skin Cancer Experts

Screening & Prevention

At Memorial Sloan-Kettering Skin Cancer Center Hauppauge, we offer a variety of screening methods to detect skin cancer. We use several imaging technologies to assist in the detection of skin cancer. These include total body photography, individual lesion photography (photographing a specific area of abnormal skin), and dermoscopy (the use of a hand-held instrument that enables doctors to see structures below the superficial layer of the skin). Confocal microscopy, which uses imaging to diagnose skin cancers at the cellular level, is also available, however this tool remains investigational.

Our doctors also monitor patients who are at high risk of developing skin cancer, including but not limited to those who have congenital nevi (moles present at birth), dysplastic nevi (atypical moles), fair skin, family history of skin cancer, and sun-damaged skin.

Skin Cancer Treatments at Hauppauge

Our dermatologists at Hauppauge are expert in evaluating, managing, and treating skin cancer. We offer surgery, Mohs surgery, and photodynamic therapy. Mohs surgery, which is used primarily to treat squamous and basal cell carcinomas, allows the surgeon to pinpoint and remove cancerous tissue while leaving healthy skin intact. In photodynamic therapy, a photosensitizing chemical is applied to the skin, and a light source activates the chemical, which kills the cancerous or precancerous skin cells.

Support Services

A social worker who provides counseling and support to patients and family members coping with the spectrum of issues related to life during and after treatment of cancer is also available. These services are offered at our Commack location.
