Perry's Story
Perry's dramatic
battle with trilateral
retinoblastoma

Brain and spinal cord tumors -- known as central nervous system tumors (CNS) -- are the most common type of solid tumor in children, constituting about 20 percent of all malignancies in patients under the age of 15. Brain tumors can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). There are many different types of brain tumors. Tumors that form in the tissues and cells of a child's brain are called primary brain tumors. In some cases, tumors that have originated in other parts of the body spread, or metastasize, to the brain, but this is rare in children.

In the sections below, you will find information about our approach and expertise in the treatment of children with brain tumors; a list of our pediatric brain tumor team members; information about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric brain tumors; our latest treatment advances; and survivorship and support resources.

  • Our Approach & Expertise
Where your child gets treated first is essential in determining long term outcome. Our pediatric neurosurgical team, which sees about 70 children with brain and spinal cord tumors each year, has a tremendous amount of experience with the often delicate task of removing a brain tumor in a child whose neurologic development is still in progress.
  • Our Team of Experts
Our pediatric brain tumor specialists, their education, training, board certifications, current publications, and specific areas of expertise.
  • Symptoms & Diagnosis
A description of symptoms and methods of diagnosis associated with pediatric brain tumors -- a disease for which establishing the proper diagnosis is crucial to ensure that your child receives the most appropriate treatment.
  • Types of Brain Tumors & their Treatments
A description of the treatments available for pediatric brain tumors at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
  • Innovative Treatments
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Childhood Brain Tumor group participates in national trials through the Children's Oncology Group, but we also offer many treatment protocols unique to Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
  • Our Clinical Trials
A continually updated listing of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's current clinical trials for pediatric brain tumors.
  • Survivorship & Support
Once your child has been treated for a brain tumor, a normal pattern of life is essential for complete recovery. Memorial Sloan-Kettering provides support for any tumor- or treatment-related side-effects that may include on-going cognitive changes, neurologic symptoms, and school re-entry issues.
