Our physicians have pioneered a number of new treatments for mesothelioma and treat a relatively large number of patients with this disease. For example, we were among the first to use intensity-modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, for mesothelioma patients with unresectable disease. IMRT allows radiation to target the pleura, sparing surrounding healthy tissue and organs, such as the lung.
Our surgeons also have extensive experience performing a technically complicated surgical procedure known as an extrapleural pneumonectomy. We have established a large mesothelioma tumor bank and patient database, which allows us to analyze tumor samples and track patients' treatment and outcomes. We have also created a Mesothelioma Working Group, in which experts in their respective fields share information on research and treatment advances.
Focus on the Patient
Communication with patients and caregivers is an important priority at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. We believe that treating the whole person, not just the disease, is the best for patients and family members. At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, we offer a broad range of emotional support programs designed to help patients and family members cope with the range of issues related to life during and after cancer treatment.
