Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, founded in 1977, annually sees approximately 2,500 new patients and performs 10,000 follow-up visits for patients and families. It is the first of such groups devoted solely to the clinical care and teaching of, as well as research into, the psychological issues involved with cancer. Having pioneered the development of psychiatry in the oncology setting, the department serves as the first and largest national resource for training and research in psychiatric oncology, as well as being one of several sites for training in the psychological aspects of AIDS.
