Program Description
Clinical scholars are integrated as full members of the clinical team, involved with all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. Scholars attend outpatient clinics, and assist with surgical procedures and the perioperative care of patients. Working as members of a multidisciplinary team that includes medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, scholars learn the modern management of urologic cancers. Resident participation in surgery varies with the level of experience of the resident and the complexity of the surgical procedure.
Research scholars are integrated into one of the Center's translational research programs focusing on genitourinary cancers. Scholars select their laboratory assignment and research project in colloaboration with the mentor and the Whitmore Scholars Committee. The scholar is expected to design, complete, and publish a major research project by the end of residency.
All Whitmore scholars participate in weekly didactic and multidisciplinary educational conferences and grand rounds, as well as specialty conferences at the Center on related scientific subjects. Scholars should present their research at regional and national meetings and submit their results for publication. Regular meetings with the assigned mentor will help assure maximal academic productivity during the scholar's experience. Both the scholar and the mentor will produce a written evaluation at the completion of the experience.
