Advanced Practice Nurse

Advanced Practice Nurses are members of site-specific Disease Management Teams and specialty groups that promote multidisciplinary collaboration and high standards of care. The disease specific focus allows for a unique opportunity to develop expertise and knowledge within an area of clinical practice. Continuity of care moves across inpatient and ambulatory settings and all stages of disease and treatment. Our academic setting provides diverse opportunities for research, education, professional development, and evidence-based practice, while providing clinically challenging care.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering supports the dynamic and varied practices of 36 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 91 Nurse Practitioners.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Clinical Nurse Specialist practices in a multidisciplinary team. The scope of the practice includes staff development, education and staff support. Clinical Nurse Specialists are responsible for the care of disease specific patients, as well as staff development including orientation, research initiatives, and development of patient care standards. The specialist participates in the implementation of patient education and clinical support programs to insure optimum care throughout the healthcare continuum. Clinical Nurse Specialists work in the following areas:

  • Acute Care Inpatient Units
  • Ambulatory Clinics
  • Intensive Care
  • Post Anesthesia Care
  • Operating Room
  • Pediatics
  • Anesthesia Pain Management
  • Pain and Palliative Care

Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners are responsible for managing patients who are undergoing treatment in the areas of surgery and medical oncology in acute care and ambulatory settings. Nurse Practitioners are members of site-specific Disease Management Teams and specialty groups that promote multidisciplinary collaboration and high standards of care. The Nurse Practitioner works independently but collaborates with the patients' primary physicians and unit practice RNs. Nurse Practitioners are responsible for all aspects of care including: physical evaluation and assessment, medical intervention, along with documentation and reporting of responses, toxicities and adverse events.
