The Physicians' Health Study II sought to evaluate the role of vitamin C or E supplementation in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, and involved over 14,000 men aged 50 or older. Following supplementation with vitamins C and E, an 8-year follow-up showed that the number of men who suffered major cardiovascular events was the same in both the treatment and the placebo groups. Vitamins C or E may not prevent cardiovascular disease contrary to popular belief.
