Chief, Brachytherapy Service
I am a radiation oncologist with a special expertise in the treatment of prostate cancer using brachytherapy (radiation delivered by seeds implanted directly in the tumor) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT -- a form of 3-D conformal radiation therapy). Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has one of the largest clinical experiences with IMRT for prostate cancer, and we have demonstrated excellent outcomes as well as reduced side effects with this approach. We have also developed new 3-D conformal computer-optimized intraoperative planning techniques for prostate brachytherapy that has significantly improved the accuracy of seed implant therapy and further reduced treatment side effects in patients treated over the past five years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. For seed implants, we have recently integrated magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy into our intraoperative computer-planning systems to pinpoint the delivery of concentrated radiation doses to documented abnormal regions within the prostate gland.

Currently, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Brachytherapy -- a medical journal that addresses all aspects of this sub-specialty -- and Chairman of the National Patterns of Care Study for Genitourinary Cancers.
