Nuclear medicine imaging differs from conventional radiologic imaging in that it aims to assess the metabolic processes that lead to a structural change in tissues, rather than the structure itself. I am a nuclear medicine physician who has a particular interest in colon and thoracic cancers. I'm skilled at reading PET-CT examinations, and I am also interested in the development of new tracers and methods to evaluate a patient's response to cancer therapy.
Dr. Marc Gollub, another radiologist here at MSKCC, and I have pioneered the technique of PET-CT virtual colonoscopy that images and characterizes polyps in the colon without resorting to a conventional colonoscopy.
In addition, I am skilled at lymphoscintigraphy (sentinel-node mapping) of breast and skin tumors. This technique is used to identify the sentinel lymph node (the first draining lymph node near a tumor). Once identified, this lymph node can be removed and examined to see if it contains tumor cells.
